About Dachstein Mountains Nature Park

The Dachstein Mountains Nature Park is a protected natural area located in the Austrian federal states of Styria and Upper Austria. Centered around the imposing Dachstein massif, the park is characterized by a spectacular range of alpine terrain including glaciers, limestone cliffs, deep gorges, and karst formations. It encompasses the iconic Dachstein Glacier, which crowns the 2,995-meter-high Hoher Dachstein peak, the highest in the region. The area boasts notable geological features such as the Eisriesenwelt ice cave, the world’s largest ice cave, and the Dachstein Skywalk, a panoramic viewing platform suspended over a cliff edge. Ecologically, the park supports diverse alpine flora and fauna, including endemic plant species and animals such as chamois, ibex, golden eagles, and marmots. Historically, the Dachstein massif has long been a cultural and mountaineering landmark with routes dating back to early alpinism in the 19th century. The park attracts visitors for a wide range of outdoor activities, including extensive hiking and trekking on over 150 kilometers of trails, alpine climbing, mountain biking, skiing on glacier slopes, and caving. Its scenic vistas, combined with accessible infrastructure such as mountain huts, cable cars, and visitor centers, make it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The park is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site designated for the Dachstein limestone massif and Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut cultural landscape. With a blend of natural grandeur and recreational opportunities, Dachstein Mountains Nature Park provides a rich alpine experience in Central Europe.
